I find it interesting that these “lecture group” companies say that these midlist and backlist authors are doomed to fail as presenters because they can’t “give away” their books and that the writers should be concentrating on their writing. Every promotional book I’ve read and class I’ve taken on the subject tells us that doing short presentations and even keynotes are what ultimately give the author the most exposure and therefore better sales.

I’ve done a fair bit of speaking as a attorney and author, and I’ve found one thing they said is absolutely true: The Keynoter makes the money and gets the press. On the other hand, if you’re a business author who does consulting, then the opportunity to use the speech to generate interest in your consulting services may make it interesting.
